Gynecomastia is a condition of overdeveloped or enlarged breast tissue of the chest which is very common condition in men of any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs. Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair a man’s self confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy in order to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by:
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- Sometimes excess breast skin
- Present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
Gynecomastia surgery can help by restoring a flatter, firmer appearance to the male chest. Procedures often utilize newer liposculpting techniques with small, hidden incisions. Often, this procedure has limited downtime and no need for general anesthesia. In patients who have primarily firm glandular tissue located beneath the nipple, a small inconspicuous incision is placed at the margin of the nipple/areolar complex to remove the tissue directly and create a more appealing masculine appearance. Many patients may also have excess skin which may require removal in order to restore the ideal male chest. Limited incisions concealed in the natural creases of the chest are extremely effective in eliminating this extra skin and soft tissue, known as Male Breast Reduction Surgery.
