Breast Reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size and shape that is proportionate to the body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. Overly large breasts can cause some women to have both health and emotional problems. In addition to self image issues, a patient may also experience physical pain and discomfort. Furthermore, the weight of excess breast tissue can impair one’s ability to lead an active lifestyle. The emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having heavy, large pendulous breasts is as important an issue to many women as the physical discomfort and pain. As with breast lift surgery, Breast reduction surgery is also designed to lift and shape the breasts to their more youthful and perky appearance.
Breast reduction surgery should be considered if a patient has been:
- – Bothered by the feeling that the breasts are too large
- – limiting physical activity or activities of daily living due to heavy pendulous breasts
- – Having symptoms of back, neck and shoulder pain caused by the weight of the breasts
- – Experiencing shoulder indentations from bra straps that support heavy, pendulous breasts
- – Developing skin irritation beneath the breast crease
- – Noticing that the breasts hang low and have stretched skin
- – Bothered by breasts that rest below the breast crease when they are unsupported
- – Observing progression of enlarged areolas caused by stretched skin
Dr. Calloway uses a variety of surgical techniques to achieve the ideal result for each patient. Although some patients may require the more traditional incisions on the breasts, many patients are candidates for the newer state-of-the-art procedures that limit scarring by using limited incisions. As with breast lift patients, limiting incisions can often lead to higher quality results in many patients. As every patient presents with specific and unique aspects of breast sizes and appearances, Dr. Calloway recognizes that every procedure needs to be tailored and customized to the individual. Consequently, breast reduction surgery represents a wide array of procedures that are blended and adapted to each specific patient to achieve the desired natural reduction and lifting of the breasts.
The cost of the surgery can vary depending on the types of procedures utilized. The surgery may also be included in most covered benefits offered by Health Insurance Plans. Dr. Calloway and his staff are available to assist in contacting insurance plans to arrange for coverage benefits. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia in our Accredited Outpatient Surgical Facility. Recovery is generally 2-3 weeks before resumption of exercise regimens. Also included as part of the procedure, Dr. Calloway performs non invasive laser treatments on the limited incisions to help them fade more rapidly. Thorough individualized instructions are reviewed with the patient and caregiver prior to surgery, and frequent postoperative visits with Dr. Calloway and his staff ensure a smooth and straightforward recovery.*
