Scar and Trauma Revisions

Scar and Trauma Revisions are procedures designed to improve the appearance of aesthetically unappealing scars or deformities.  They are unavoidable results of injury or surgery, and their development can be unpredictable. Poor healing may contribute to scars that are obvious, unsightly or disfiguring. Scars may be raised or recessed, different in color or texture from surrounding healthy tissue or particularly noticeable due to their size, shape or location.  Scar revision surgery is meant to minimize the scar so that it is more consistent with the surrounding normal skin tone and texture.  The available options vary widely, and depend on the number, type and complexity of the deformities.

Options including non-invasive laser treatments, laser resurfacing treatments such as Fraxel laser resurfacing, or more invasive surgical revisions may be necessary to restore more natural appearing contours and ideal appearance.  Previous surgeries, traumatic deformities, cancer related deformities and congenital deformities are the most common issues requiring scar and soft tissue revisions.  Dr. Calloway will carefully review the patient’s clinical presentation with specific desired results and typically spends significant time discussing surgical and non surgical options.  The treatment plan will generally involve a combination of techniques and technologies to achieve the best results with the least invasive options possible.

The cost of the treatment will vary depending on the procedures utilized.  Any surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia with mild sedation or under general anesthesia in our Accredited Outpatient Surgical Facility.  The usual recovery is approximately 1-2 weeks before exercise regimens are resumed.  The stitches do not require removal as they slowly dissolve over time.  Also included as part of the procedure, Dr. Calloway performs non invasive laser treatments on any incisions to help them fade more rapidly.   Thorough individualized instructions are reviewed with the patient and caregiver prior to surgery, and frequent postoperative visits with Dr. Calloway and his staff ensure a smooth and straightforward recovery.*
